Alex Harrison
Alex Harrison is an Under 25s International Grand Prix Dressage rider, Coach and BD Judge, Based at his own and Jonathan Clarke-Wests’ “Collective Equestrian” just outside the small village of Chew Magna, Somerset.
Alex started riding at the age of 11 when he convinced his parents to buy him a 3 year old 16.2 TB … Needless to say, this may not have been an ideal first horse for a rider yet to learn how to rise to the trot! Combined with the absence of a saddle for the first two years Alex fell off, a lot. Undeterred; before the horse was 5 and without any formal education, the partnership went from strength to strength. They could often be spotted cantering around bridle-less round local fields and performing circus tricks to curious passers-by.
Fast forward 10 years, after spending time working at various Natural Horsemanship yards both in the UK and abroad, Alex has honed his understanding for the horse and channelled it into the sport of Dressage.
In 2017 Alex burst on to the scene winning all 3 Young Rider classes at Hickstead International aboard his then Small Tour horse, Ruben IV.
In 2018 on the then only 7 year old “Diamond Hill”, whom Alex acquired as a three year old, he represented GB at Hagen CDIYR achieving the pairs first +70% International score and were subsequently selected for the European Team in Fontainebleau, France.
With the progression of his riding career, Alex also felt passionate about giving back to the sport and subsequently trained to be one of the UK’s youngest listed judges. Being a firm believer that knowledge must be shared to further the sport; to this end he has helped to train multiple combinations through the levels, with a particular focus on training the Piaffe both in hand and ridden.
Alex has since competed his string of horses across all levels from young horse classes to International Grand Prix, earning himself a place on the 2021 European U25 Grand Prix Team in Hagen, Germany; Whilst simultaneously campaigning at senior shows to great success.
Alex is trained by fellow SRPR athlete Lara Butler and joins us at an exciting stage of his career with a talented string of horses and projects planned for the future.
